Heirlooms explores the interplay of generational expectations. Composed of cascading dyed fabric strips that embody paternal, idealistic male ideals and juxtaposed by a fawn who is trapped in naive aspiration navigating the fading influence of her father. This piece was inspired by my background growing up in a conservative household where gender roles were reinforced at a very young age. It explores the discoveries I made as I reached maturity and ultimately how I came to terms on what it means to me to be a woman. I see the red ribbons as symbolic threads of tradition that weave a story of conflict and resilience through the piece. By analyzing the relationship between father and daughter, the artwork creates an evolving dialogue. Ultimately exploring the delicate inheritance of values and identity passed down through generations.
